The Class and reputation of aged Tiffany Lamps

To be rich and have a most luxurious house in the 19th century, was to have Tiffany lamps within the walls of that house. While this time, these lamps had wealth stamped all over them because of the appearance they gave. It has been said that Tiffany lamps were created for royalty with the vivid colors of stained glass.

Tiffany & company were the creators of this style of lamps and the company is still nearby and going strong today as they ever have. But in today’s world, they in general focus on beautiful pieces of jewelry instead of creating lamps. The lamps are still a popular assembler item and there are still many enthusiasts that are in quest of positive old Tiffany lamps in order to add to their collection. Charles Lewis Tiffany was the founder of the Tiffany & company and their inventor and designer. He was a very creative soul and searched nearby the world for a unique and distinct creative way to show off the attractiveness of light.;

Tiffany Lamp Reviews

He developed a technique, after all of his research, which complicated a process of exposing hot glass in with metallic oxides in order to create fumes that would seep into the molten glass and cause color shades and hues to form within it. In today’s world, we know this as “iridescent glass” but most population know of it as something like a stained-glass window.

These Tiffany lamps had beautiful stained glass shades and all of them were made in 1895 and on straight through to 1920 when the yield of Tiffany lamps ceased. This is what makes them such a collector’s item because in the middle of these years, only so many Tiffany lamps were made. There were no more after that! There are a lot of lamp makers today that try to replicate old Tiffany lamps but none of them can seem to ever get the authentic look of the lamp. The look always still seems more “modern” than old — no matter how much they try to disguise the fact. But one thing that has not changed about old Tiffany lamps, is that they still give off the impression of wealth.

And you admittedly need to be wealthy in order to buy one of the genuine old Tiffany lamps — sometimes even if you just want to buy a reproduction! These lamps can cost an private everywhere from hundreds of dollars into the thousands of dollars and sometimes even a lot more if it is truly one of the customary old Tiffany lamps.

Your wisest policy? Buy only from a reputable and knowledgeable dealer/seller. If you are being asked to pay a large sum, do not hesitate to get an independent, objective assessment before finalizing your purchase.

Tiffany Pool Table Lights From Toltec – A tell

Toltec’s Tiffany-style pool table lights can be a great expanding to any pool room. I took a fancy to their beloved Pearl line of lighting, so this reveal is focused on those.

The citizen of Toltec have this to say for themselves:

Tiffany Lamp Reviews

“Founded in the 1970′s, Toltec is a family-owned and run enterprise dedicated to creating quality and competitively priced lighting fixtures for your home. While quality and value continue to be the hallmarks that Toltec is celebrated for, we take pride in having taken the lead in the field of design. We are continually introducing new concepts and ideas while maintaining a close eye on tradition. At Toltec, we bridge all inherent worlds.”

Let me tell you, these Toltecs are some very finely crafted billiard lights. The stained glass is elegant and not too gaudy, giving just enough accent to your table and your pool room to really give you that ‘warm-fuzzy’ feeling.

My personal favorites are the #129 beloved Pearl Tiffany Light with Pearl and Green with Brass Channels and the #527E beloved Pearl Tiffany Light with Clear Ripple and ClearGlass with Brass Channels. The designs highlight some perfect glass finishes, and can bring some major charm and beauty to your pool table rooms.

The Pearl and Green runs about 5 with just 3 lights, but if you’re like me, and want to light up a 9′ pool table instead of those tiny miniature 7′ or 8′ tables, I’m guessing you’ll need a longer fixture with an extra light bulb, bumping the cost up to 5. I’m not definite yet if the extra-bulb-upgrade really gives you a longer pool table light, but I’ve sent their customer service a query, and I’ll update this post as soon as they’ve responded (Update: yes, the extra bulb extends the coverage area of the fixture). Now, I like this particular option of pearl-and-green because the two-toned color task matches and compliments my beloved pool-felt color: deep green (so their other color choices, of course, would thus be ideal for tables covered in alternate, yet matching, colors).

The ClearGlass pool table lighting comes with only one choice: the 10 candelabra lights, and two lights pointing down. Asking price is 0, which is a bit hefty, but probably worth the budget-stretch inspecting how eye-catching it is. Brass and clear-glass candelabra lighting direct within your game rooms really adds an old-world touch. Fantasize matching this with a warm dark-wood theme, one reminiscent of gas-lights and cobblestone streets. Add some 8 ball or 9 ball themed black-&-white framed posters to improve the atmosphere, or even some old-school mafia B&W’s full of tommy-guns and ancient cars, and you’ve got yourself one jiving game room! My only worry with this light is that the candelabra lights might be too spellbinding and distracting. I Kind of wish they had included an option for smoked-glass tinting to take away a bit of the glare.

Most of these Toltec Tiffany Billiard Lights are ready in 2, 3 or 4 light configurations, even single-bulb pendants with attaching chains or light-stands. All Billiard lights come with enough chain, wiring and ceiling canopy for a nine-foot high ceiling. Extra chain and wire are ready upon ask at the time you place an order.

overall, I’d give them 4 out 5 stars. These are some top-notch lights, but I’ll save the 5th star for something that really blows me away.

Handel Lamp History

Philip Julius Handel first established the Handel enterprise in Meriden, Connecticut in 1876. They specialized in high quality reverse painted lamp shades and were generally considered a less costly alternative to the Tiffany lamp popularized by Louis ease Tiffany. They also made leaded glass shades similar to Tiffany as well as vases, humidor boxes and other attractive objects. The most beloved lamps of the Art Nouveau 1890-1920 and the Art Deco duration 1920-1939 were Tiffany, Handel, Pairpoint and Duffner & Kimberly.

Philip Handel (age 19) and Adolph Eydam (age 21) formed a partnership in 1885 and created the “Eydam and Handel Company” in Meriden, Connecticut specializing in glass decorating and lamp manufacturing. They used lamp bases from other suppliers not their own lamp bases. In 1892 the partnership ended and the enterprise later moved to larger facilities in New York city in 1893 and was known as “Philip J. Handel” and later as “Handel and Company”. In 1902 they opened their own foundry and began producing their own lamp bases. The Handel enterprise was incorporated on June 11, 1903 and Philip J. Handel, Albert Parlow, and Antone Teich were the principals. In 1906, Philip J. Handel married Fannie Hirschfield Handel his second wife. She became the company’s president upon Philip Handel’s death in 1914. In 1918 she remarried and in 1919 William F. Handel, Philip’s cousin took operate of the company.

Tiffany Lamp Reviews

Following World War I was a duration of mountainous growth. The cheaper was roaring and the enterprise had assembled a very impressive and talented group of artists and craftsmen. However, the Great Depression drastically changed the company’s fortunes and by 1929 the enterprise was struggling. The enterprise ceased output wholly in 1936. The Handel Lamp enterprise was the very finest maker of reverse-painted lamps. Handel also made some leaded glass lamps. The enterprise is a prime example of fine American quality craftsmanship.

Handel bases were most generally made of a zinc alloy, spelter with a bronze patina or finish. Some were made of genuine bronze. The marking was generally the enterprise name on the lowest of the base. The markings consisted of raised letters and/or a label. Sometimes the marking would be underneath the base or sometimes on top of the the base. Lamp shades were marked on metal components and/or on the glass itself. Some of the glass pieces are signed by the artists.

Many of the medium to larger Handel lamp bases were wired with multiple sockets which were operated by pull chains that had small and discrete shaped pull balls on the ends of the chain.

It has long been a tasteless practice to match slag glass lamp shades, Tiffany type shades and others to discrete lamp bases that were not the original. Other tasteless practice has been to place an unsigned shade on a signed Handel lamp base and pass the entire lamp off as a “Handel”. Many if not most lamps and shades are referred to as Handel lamps naturally because the style is similar to that of an traditional Handel lamp. Experts today recommend that about 90% of all lamps called Handel were not truly made by Handel. There are many lamps that are signed but that are not authentic. Identification of Handel leaded lamps is a subjective process that few population are grand to do.

Given the company’s history it may be difficult to prove the negative: i.e. That a particular lamp is Not a Handel. But as usual, money speaks and you will find that a Handel lamp and shade with precise markings, attributes and documentation commands a very prime price as compared to any lamp that is “attributed to Handel”.

For instance, some of Handel’s small and simple desk and simple piano lamps have recently sold for around 0. generally the more complicated ones sell for over ,000. There are some rare ones that have sold for over ,000.

Some Handel glass artists are highly regarded and their works bring a prime price. Their signatures can be seen on some Handel lamp shades. Among these Handel artists are Bailey, Bedigie, Broggi, Gubisch, Matzow, Palme, and Parlow and Runge.
